Handle concussions as the serious injuries they are

It doesn't take much for a car accident to cause severe, long-lasting health issues. Whether the victims are young or old, tall or short, in good health or in poor health, injuries sustained in a car accident can linger for a long time - not just a few weeks, but sometimes months or even years.

Concussions, for example, are injuries that can affect people's lives on a long-term basis. Because a concussion is a traumatic brain injury, various brain functions can be affected. Some of them may not be evident right away, so seeing a doctor is crucial after you are involved in a car wreck - even if you don't think you are injured.

Each person's body responds differently to a brain injury, but some immediate signs of a concussion might include:

  • Headaches, ringing in the ears and/or seeing stars
  • Loss of consciousness for a temporary period
  • Confusion or a sense of "fogginess"
  • Vomiting and nausea
  • Slurred speech, delayed reaction time and fatigue

Some of these effects might go away, while others could be with you for awhile. Some might creep in gradually but still have a profound impact, such as:

  • General listlessness and wearing down easily
  • Changes in personality, including becoming more irritable, depressed or forgetful
  • Trouble sleeping and concentrating
  • Changes in sensory perception, including taste, smell, hearing and vision

It's especially important to be observant of children who may have suffered head trauma. Young kids whose language skills are limited might experience these symptoms but be unable to describe them or ask for help. Any delay in their treatment could be extremely dangerous.
